a Special Report from the Superintendents
of Police regarding the effect of fishing boats being detained by Pirates in a creek called Sing hoi, close to Bias Bay,
and that this information had been obtained from some of the fishing boats that had succeeded in escape. I thereupon immediately addressed the accompanying letter to Commander Kay, who most readily and cheerfully undertook to proceed in search of the marauders; and next morning, the 27th, he left accordingly.
On the afternoon of that day, Collier arrived in the "Hastings" from Singapore, and on the 30th, this Consul-General received Commander Kay's reports of the same date, (Inclosure 1,)
upon which this Consul-General determined on sending Her Majesty's steamer "Fury" to assist the "Columbine" in totally destroying the Piratical fleet. Your Lordship will learn from Commander Kay's second Report of the 2nd October, (Inclosure 2,) the very successful result of the combined operations.
The fleet destroyed on this occasion was under the command of one Chui Apoo, supposed to be the individual who, with six others, murdered Captain Da Costa and Lieutenant Dunbar on this Island in March last.
I thought this, therefore, a favourable opportunity of giving publicity to two official communications which I have lately addressed to the Chinese Commissioner, (with that Functionary's reply to the latter), relative to this man and piracy generally, in order that Her Majesty's
